Overview
Lunugala Divisional Secretariat which spread over 142 km2 is one of the arduous Divisional Secretariat in Badulla District. Most of the areas in this division has used to tea planting. So, there are two features comes out related to colonization. That is in the upper sides of the mountains; the estate colonies and in lower sides; the villages. According to this situation these villages become very ancient and the majority of the people in those villages are Sinhalese. These villages were the areas which people set up in the period of 1818 rebellion as safe places.
For the sake of administrative needs Lunugala divisional secretariat has divided into 28 Grama Niladhari divisions. 20th April 2001 was the day that Lunugala Divisional Secretariat established. Before that it belonged to Passara Division. In support of administrative convenience 20th April 2001 Lunugala Divisional Secretariat has established in a building which belongs to Lunugala Pradeshiya Saba in the Bibila high way. The opening office staff contained two clerks with the Chief Clerk. There were three Divisional Secretaries were here from the beginning. At the time which the Lunugala Divisional Secretariat opened there was not a Divisional Secretary and the Divisional Secretary of Passara Divisional Secretariat has worked as the acting Divisional Secretary till 27th August 2001.
From 27th August 2001 Mr.W.G.Napawala was appointed as the permanent Divisional Secretary. He was served 27th August 2001 to 27th November 2003. After that 27th November 2003 to 25th February 2006, Mr.J.M.S.Jayasundara was the Divisional Secretary. 25th February 2006 to till now Mr.P.S.P.Abeywardena is working as the Divisional Secretary in the Lunugala Divisional Secretariat.
The new Divisional Secretariat building which built in Sumudugama Grama Niladhari Division was opened by the Minister of State Administration and Home Affairs Mr.Sarath Amunugama on 17th December 2006. So from 17th December 2006 the Divisional Secretariat office which was in the Lunugala Pradeshiya Saba building was transferred to the newly built office in Sumudugama Grama Niladhari Division.
The land which now the Lunugala Divisional Secretariat office situated was belonged to Lunugala Paththini Kovil.
From the beginning of the Divisional Secretariat office in the new building, facing new challenges, making new changes we are reaching to the success day by day.
